Dr. JOHN O. SCHWENN

President, Dalton State College

Dr. John O. Schwenn took office as Dalton State College’s fourth president on March 1, 2008.  A native of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Dr. Schwenn received a bachelor of science degree (1971) from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse.  He earned a master of science degree (1973) and doctorate in Rehabilitation and Special Education with a minor in Educational Psychology (1976) from the University of Wisconsin – Madison.  Dr. Schwenn was presented  the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse Distinguished Alumni Award in 2005.

He began his education career in 1976 at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, rising to the rank of professor in 1984.  Dr. Schwenn served as an Associate Professor and later as a Professor of Psychology and Special Education at Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas, beginning in 1989.  While at Emporia State, he also served in a number of administrative capacities, including Associate Division Chair of Psychology and Special Education, Chair of Psychology and Special Education, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Interim President.

Throughout his career, Dr. Schwenn has published numerous papers, book chapters, and books on teaching and learning in addition to making dozens of state, regional, and national presentations.

Locally, he is a member of North Georgia Regional Educational Service Agency Board of Control, and the Rotary Club of Dalton.

Dr. Schwenn and his wife Judy have three grown children, one granddaughter, and one grandson.
